It is important for both client and therapist to believe that change is possible. I find that too often, psychological theories or individual's belief systems suggest that old patterns and influences irrevocably limit one's thoughts, feelings, or future actions. While persons will obviously be influenced by their past experiences, it is important to believe that positive change is possible and that prior limitations need not apply today and tomorrow. In terms of therapeutic style I sometimes focus on cognitive factors, other times on examining interpersonal dynamics, and generally work on helping clients generate faith, creativity and tenacity about improving themselves.

Therapy would not be useful, if clients did not practice new thoughts and actions outside of meetings with the psychologist. I tend to be humorously challenging to clients. I believe that if I can exemplify a challenge or concept in a funny or striking kind of way, the concept will be more likely remembered and practiced in between sessions.
